Cleaning up old loans (on your Kindle device)
-
Go to your Library On my old e-ink Kindle, it's on the bottom right of the screen.
-
Press and hold each expired library book. You can't tell which book is expired from the screen you're on, but if you tap it normally (as if to read it) and it says you no longer have access to the book, that's the clue.
-
Hit the Remove from Library button This will delete it permanently from your library, including notes. It may take a minute to update the amazon.com website, but it should be removed immediately from your Kindle.
-
Move on to the next book Unfortunately it's hard to tell on a Kindle which book is an expired library loan without trying to actually read it. It may be easier to do on a computer.
The easier, faster, and safer solution is to use Kindle Library Cleaner to clean up your library in one go.

Cleaning up old loans (on a computer)
-
Go to your Digital Content library on amazon.com You can navigate to your Digital Content library by going to your account drop-down (from the top right, where it says Hello, Your Name), and finding "Content Library"
-
Select only borrows Find where it says View: Books ▼ All ▼ and change All to Borrows
-
Select only the library books in the page of this list If you have a Kindle family library, it will show other peoples' purchased books. You don't want to delete these! The way you can identify only expired library loans is that they say This book was a Kindle digital library loan , and Expired on XXXX .
I suggestcmd + forctrl + fin your browser to find each expired book. Search the page for Expired on and click the checkbox next to each book to select it. -
Delete the selected books This will show a somewhat scary popup from Amazon, saying these books will be gone forever. If you've only selected expired loans, this is safe to click the orange button that says Yes, delete permanently.
-
Reload the page and repeat steps 3 and 4 You've been viewing items 1 to 25 of your entire list of borrows. When you deleted some items, the first 25 borrows may now include expired loans again.
-
Once you've found 0 expired loans, go to the next page You've deleted all the loans on that page, but not necessarily in your entire library. Walk through each page of your Kindle library and ensure it's free of expired loans.
Or avoid all the clicking and nervousness about which books you're deleting, and use Kindle Library Cleaner to do all this for you automatically.
